Reverend Randy Thompson, Associate Pastor of Music and Senior Adults at musicminister@gormanbc.org.

A musician “from birth” might be stretching things a bit, but I can’t remember a time in my life that I wasn’t singing. In addition to my lifelong love for music, God blessed me with a Christian home and a nurturing church during my first 17 years of life.  First Baptist Church of Haw River, NC was that church.  My brother, his family, and my dad are still very active members there.  It was there that I accepted the Lord at age 8, was baptized, acknowledged a call on my life to the music ministry at age 16, and was later ordained into the ministry.  I went on to college at Wake Forest University, Westminster Choir College, and Fresno State University.  I have a Bachelor of Church Music degree with a major in vocal performance from Westminster, and a Master of Arts degree in Music with a major in conducting from Fresno State.  I served my military duty during the Viet-Nam years by singing in the U. S. Navy Chorus – “Sea Chanters” (stationed in Washington, DC).  It was in Washington that I met my wonderful and Godly wife Debra.  Following the service, I sang professionally for a number of years in the New York-Philadelphia-Washington area, got married, finished my Master’s degree, and saw God begin redirecting my focus from performing to ministry.  We began our ministry pilgrimage together (God, Deb, and me) in Fresno, CA in September of 1978.  Yes, that’s right; in 2008 I will have served my Lord in full-time music ministry for 30 Years!  The last 16 years have also seen a ministry to senior adults added to my music ministry (now I am a senior myself).  It seems like just yesterday that we began our ministry in Fresno and in 1980 had our first son, Jonathan.  We have been used by God to serve churches in Fresno, CA; Amarillo, TX; Albany, GA (where we had our second son, Stephen); High Point, NC; and now, Durham, NC.  I am humbled to think that God has used me in this way, and I pray that He will continue to use me however He sees fit.  As I walk with God I am becoming more and more aware of how important a personal “love relationship” with the Lord is and how unimportant everything else is.  It’s ALL about JESUS!!  I would remind us all of the lyrics from the song “Day by Day” from the musical “Godspell”:

"Day by day, O dear Lord, three things I pray:
to SEE THEE more CLEARLY, to LOVE THEE more DEARLY,
to FOLLOW THEE more NEARLY, day by day!"

Join me in that prayer as we serve the Lord here at Gorman.
